Wyoming football picked up a much needed win against the Utah State Aggies, 28-14 this Saturday.
The Cowboys improve to 5-3 with this win, and a successful homecoming week comes to an end.
A rivalry game that was more heated than ever, as quarterback (QB) Peasley would play his first game against his former team. Former Cowboy QB Levi Williams was also on the opposite sideline this time around.
The battle for Bridger’s rifle was on, a tradition between the two teams to award a rifle to the winning team.
With a couple of punts to begin the game for both teams, the defenses were feeling confident as ever in the early first quarter.
QB Peasley connected with tight end (TE) O’Brien for his second catch of the season, and a big one. This set up running back (RB) Swen to break free for a 30 yard touchdown run.
To begin the second quarter, RB Swen got into the endzone for a second time, to extend the Pokes lead to 14-0. It was very evident that the run game would be crucial to this game, with RB James getting lots of work as well as Swen.
They would both go on to finish the game with more than 100 yards, Swen with 160 on 28 carries, and James with 120 on 10 carries.
Near the end of the first half, Utah State QB Davenport scored, and cut the Pokes lead down to 14-7.
The half was not over yet though, as QB Peasley connected with wide receiver (WR) Weiland to put them into field goal range. Of course, the world class kicker (K) Hoyland punched it through the uprights, closing out just a 19 second drive.
In the first minute of the second half, safety Ekeler comes up with a big interception, peeling the football out of the hands of a Utah State receiver.
The Cowboys were not able to capitalize on the pick, and gave up a rushing touchdown soon after. The Cowboys were only up 17-14, as the Aggies seemed to have some life in them.
The Cowboys would go on to score another touchdown late in the fourth quarter to seal this game up. RB Swen punched in his third of the game, an incredible performance from him.
The Pokes beat the Aggies, and keep the rifle in Laramie.
The Cowboys will take a trip to Hawaii next week, to take on the Rainbow Warriors on Saturday, October 29.
