The Wyoming women’s soccer team falls to San Jose State in the Mountain West championship match.
They earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament, and just fell short of making Wyoming history. The game ended 0-0 with San Jose State winning penalty kicks 6-5.
The San Jose State Spartans will move on to the NCAA tournament, after taking down the Cowgirls.
This wasn’t the first time the two teams met this season, with the first match in October being in Wyoming’s favor, 2-1.
The Cowgirls ended the season 8-7-5, the team’s best season since 2018.
The season did not come without its high points, as the team made the Mountain West final for the third time in program history, and were inches away from winning their first title ever.
Individual accolades were also racked up by a few Cowgirls this year, with Jamie Tatum winning Mountain West offensive player of the year. She led the league with nine goals in the regular season.
Tatum also made the Mountain West first team, along with her teammate Alyssa Bedard.
Along with these two, Alyssa Glover earned a spot on the all newcomer team for the Mountain West, due to her excellence in soccer as only a freshman.
Lastly, Colleen Corbin won Mountain West coach of the year, after leading her team to a No. 1 seed in the Mountain West tournament. The team was predicted to finish ninth in the preseason poll.
It was undoubtedly a special season, and the team will absolutely be back next year.
Due to the team’s number one seed achievement, the Mountain West tournament will be hosted in Laramie, Wyoming as the Cowgirls hope to be back in the championship once again.
