On Thursday, Nov. 10 the Cowboys basketball team beat the Nicholls State Colonels 79-68, but lost to the Southeastern Louisiana Lions 76-72.
In the game against Nicholls State, it was the first game against an NCAA division 1 team, and the Cowboys took care of business.
Brendan Wenzel played his first game of the season, and it was a big one. Dropping 20 points, he is the Pokes highest scorer of the season so far.
A couple of Nicholls players had great games, but the depth of the Pokes outlasted them. Many players contributed to Wyoming’s win, as seven different players put up eight points or more.
Hunter Maldonado added some playmaking and stellar defense, with six assists and six rebounds to complement his 12 points.
With lots of emotion coming from both teams, the Cowboys got the win to begin the season with a 2-0 record.
As for the game versus Southeastern Louisiana, the Pokes made their best effort at a comeback, but ultimately fell short.
Again, Wenzel was Wyoming’s highest scorer with 16 points along with five rebounds.
The main flaw in the Pokes game on Sunday, was the amount of missed three point shots. The team went 13-42 from deep, and 7-22 from up close.
Granted the Lions had some great interior defense, the Cowboys were getting shut down.
Hunter Maldonado had a great game though, picking up 15 points and 11 rebounds on the game.
The Cowboys will take on Howard before their thanksgiving break, looking to improve off their recent loss.
