During ASUW’s weekly meeting one senate bill passed, another was pulled, two new resolutions were read, and there were two new nominations.
Senate Bill #2836: Amendment to Steering Committee Duties and Responsibilities was written to ensure more ethical and practical practices in the Steering Committee. It passed unanimously.
Senate Bill #2837: Special Project Allocations for Fiscal Year 2023 was pulled from discussion and debate as the General Counsel is still reviewing endowments.
“It would be wise not to spend or allocate money out of those endowments until we have a more complete picture of what that is going to look like,” Vice President Hunter Swilling said on the matter. “I’m sorry I can’t share anymore but I genuinely don’t know anymore at this time.”
Two new Resolutions, Senate Resolution #2838: ASUW Recommendation on Proposed Mandatory Student Fees for FY24 and Senate Resolution #2839: ASUW Recommendation on Proposed Programmatic Fees for FY24 were read for the first time during the meeting.
The recommendations for these resolutions were made by the Tuition Allocation and Student Fee Review Committee after it held hearings for all of UW’s mandatory student fee units and for all of the program student fees.
Toward the end of the meeting, there were two new nominations and elections for Senator of the Month for August and Student-at-Large of the Month for August. According to the rules and procedures the Senate is required to elect people to these titles every month that there is a meeting.
“I know this is a little strange but there was one meeting in August,” Swilling said. “The rules are the rules and they are very clear on this. The Senate wanted every single month and we are doing every single month.”
Senator Anthony Castronovo was elected Senator of the Month for August and the Collegiate Panhellenic Council (CPH) Ex-Officio Elena Jaruszewski was elected Student-at-Large of the Month for August.
Senator Madison Engelby spoke on Jaruszewski’s behalf.
“We all know the CPH, IFC, and ASUW relationships last semester came off a bit volatile. It could have been really easy for CPH to throw in the towel and not deal with us anymore, but they created a whole new position and our Ex-Officio came in ready to work with us which was really admirable because they had every opportunity to tell us to screw off.”
This was ASUW’s third to last meeting for this year.
“After this, there are just two left, Nov. 29 and Dec. 6 and that’s it. We’ll be done. So to that end, if you have any projects that you would like to get done before the end of this semester please be aware that time is rapidly running out,” Swilling said.
The Nov. 22 meeting was canceled because it falls during the week-long Thanksgiving break. The next meeting will be on Nov. 29 at 7:00 p.m. and all students are welcome to attend.
