Cowgirls home opener results in a close loss against Gonzaga

The Wyoming Cowgirls started off their home opener with a very close game against the intimidating Gonzaga University (GU) Bulldogs. 

The teams stayed within only two points of each other for the majority of the game and Wyoming Cowgirl, Grace Ellis,even achieved a personal career record. 

Gonzaga started off with the ball, setting the Cowgirls into defense position first. Gonzaga made a point within the first minute of the game and set the pace for the first quarter. The Cowgirls fight but are slow to get into it. The first quarter ends with the score 15-14 and Gonzaga leading. 

The Cowgirls started to get more promising in the second quarter, keeping that momentum up after the halftime break and into the third quarter. The Cowgirls get the first shot of the quarter this time, putting them ahead of GU by 1 point. Both teams continue to battle it out until the halftime buzzer goes off, leaving Brown and Gold in the lead 31-30.

Maintaining that momentum from the second quarter, the pace of the game continued to pick up as the Bulldogs and Cowgirls took turns racking up points on the scoreboard. Fighting until the last ten minutes resulted with a one point lead ahead of GU making it 47-46. At this point in the game, the crowd starts to energize the stadium.

The Cowgirls have a one point lead as Gonzaga looks to get ahead and beat the pace that Wyoming has set for the fourth quarter. Gonzaga takes control of the ball at the start of the quarter. The Bulldogs took the lead away from the Cowgirls in the last 41 seconds of the game. When Wyoming got the chance to take the ball back to the key and take a shot, the ball failed to fall in the hoop, creating the upset and giving GU the win at our first home game of the 2022 fall season.

Quinn Wiedemann and Grace Ellis were the two highest scoring Cowgirls that night. Weidemann scored 17 while Ellis scored 16, giving the Cowgirl her new record high.

Cowgirl’s look to gain a win as they host Denver on Friday, November 18 at 6:30pm. It will be their second home game in a row.
