The Physical Education Teacher Education Student Association, or PETESA, hosted a fundraising event at the Laramie Ice Rink that not only brought together the community on ice but aided in raising money to send affiliated students to national and state conferences.
PETESA is a campus organization committed to the enhancement and promotion of knowledge pertaining to physical education, health education, recreation, and dance. Each individual who is associated with the organization is studying physical education at the university.
“We try to fundraise money to send us to professional developments. We go to the state conference every year, and then we also try to raise money to send us to SHAPE, which is the national conference that’s in Seattle this year,” said Grace Walker, president of PETESA.
“We just really like to promote physical activity within the community. We are in the schools teaching all semester long, so we get a great relationship with students.”
The Society of Health and Physical Education, or SHAPE, America National Convention and Expo is the leading professional development opportunity for health and physical education professionals. It helps students and educators prepare to be professional educators, to learn about health education, and to be educated on new research in the physical education field.
In addition to ice-skating, the fundraising event hosted a bake sale, ugly sweater contest, and a photo booth, filling the rink with residents and students alike.
“We fundraise money to take people to the state conference for P.E. teachers to help them pay for hotels, gas, membership fees and stuff like that. And we just like to do community events and try to get as many opportunities as possible to practice teaching,” said Jesse Olmos, secretary of PETESA.
Members of PETESA wanted to thank the Laramie community for all of their support, and they hope to see more community turnout at future fundraising events.
