The UW Rec Center and Club Sports committees officially introduced a new club sport for students to join. The Women’s Basketball team was founded by Cierra Nelson and Lillian Guimont.
“We are a very open community, we will take anybody from beginner to very experienced,” Cierra Nelson said.
“It is a women’s league but we will take guys to practice with us. But they have to be signed up on our roster in order to practice. If they want to be a traveling manager, they are more than welcome to.”
President Cierra Nelson pushed to make the club official in order to create an opportunity for women to play the sport they enjoy while meeting new people.
“I feel like basketball here is more of a relaxed environment and because of that we have more fun and probably have a better relationship with the other players. We do team bonding nights and other fun things like that, too.”
Lillian Guimont, the vice president, worked with Nelson to form the club with similar insights as her fellow teammate.
“I’m just able to play basketball with my teammates. I didn’t know any of them before, but now we’re all really good friends.”
Being a freshman, Guimont plans to stay in the club and to help it progress in this early stage.
“We’re just trying to get it up and running and get more members and more people aware about it. And just trying to fundraise and get equipment and jerseys and all that,” Guimont said.
“So right now my goal is to just get it a good solid foundation.”
Coached by Alex Fuhrman, the team looks forward to the start of this new journey. Fuhrman is a senior from Pennsylvania who came to Wyoming to study wildlife biology. Fuhrman originally had different intentions when it came to playing basketball in Wyoming before he volunteered his time to the Women’s Club Basketball team.
“One of my roommates played club soccer and then they were looking to form a club and asked me to do it. I was actually rejected by the womens’ school team to practice against because I was too tall.”
Women’s Club Basketball practices on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6-8 p.m. on the second floor in Half Acre. Visit the UW Club Sports website for more information.
