The Wyoming Cowgirls hosted Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in their first leg of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). The Cowgirls defeated their opponent by nearly 40 points.
Wyoming started off with the ball and got two points on the board right away. TAMU-CC made a couple buckets to make the score 2-4. Wyoming went to the paint next and got the opportunity to make free throws. Malene Pederson made both from the line, making the score 6-4. Both teams were neck and neck on offensive plays and by the first timeout, the score was 11-7.
Wyoming had a strong offense to begin the game. With two minutes left in the first quarter, the score was 15-11, the Cowgirls leading. A fast-paced game continued on for the rest of the quarter. When the buzzer sounded at the end of the first quarter, the score was 18-11, Wyoming still with the lead.
The Cowgirls continued their momentum from the first quarter into the second. The Cowgirls gained a huge lead by halftime at 42-18.
Corpus Christi was the first team to gain points in the start of the second half. Soon after, the Cowgirls put up six points to regain the spotlight at 48-22. By the end of the third quarter it was 61-28. The Cowgirls had the 33 point lead.
With 7:43 remaining, the score was 65-31 and the Cowgirls continued to add to their lead. At the media timeout, the scoreboard read 68-31. After they racked up some more points, at the end of the game the final score settled at 75-41 with the Cowgirls winning.
The team will be playing their next competition at Manhattan, Kansas against Kansas State on Tuesday, March 21.
