The UW Cowgirls lost to Kansas State Wildcats in the second leg of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament, thus concluding their season.
The Cowgirls traveled to Manhattan, Kansas after defeating Texas A&M on the home court the week before. The game took place on Tuesday, March 21..
At the beginning of the game, the Cowgirls made seven points before K-State picked up the lead with 13 points before the media timeout. Soon after that timeout, both teams went to the free throw line to rack up points. Emily Mellema scored a three pointer for the Cowgirls, however before the time ran out, K-State grew a bigger lead. The end of the first quarter score was 22-12.
The second quarter started off tough for the Cowgirls after they let the Wildcats gain nine points before Alyson Fertig got the team some points on the board. Kansas State held the lead at halftime with the score being 36-20.
After halftime, K-State remained in control of the game as Wyoming tried to find their momentum. The Cowgirls got two layups in a row to beat their scoring slump. The end of the third quarter had K-State in the lead 51-37.
The last 10 minutes of the game the Cowgirls started to fall behind when the closest they got to reaching Kansas State was 11 points. They were within 11 points three times but the remainder of the game was a comfortable lead for Kansas State to take the win. When the buzzer went off in the fourth quarter the score was 71-55.
