Spanning from North Dakota to Lithuania, the Wyoming Cowboys have picked up six players in this year’s recruiting class, and it’s time to get to know them.
The transfer portal has been making headlines at universities across the nation and has stuck as a big point of interest for the Cowboys. By the end of the 2022-23 season, a whopping nine players had entered the portal electing to move on from Cowboy basketball. Two graduating seniors have also contributed to the team’s dramatic roster shrink.
Now, the Pokes have got their hand in the pot for recruitment.
First off, it can be expected that Oleg Kojenets will be the next big thing for the Cowboys. The seven foot forward from Kaunas, Lithuania, transferred from University of Nebraska.
Kojenets redshirted for the Cornhuskers, but will hopefully get some playing time in Laramie.
The NAIA player of the year, Mason Walters will join the Cowboys for his last season of eligibility. He spent four years at the University of Jamestown, an NAIA program in North Dakota.
Walters’ nationwide recognition makes him a very exciting prospect and something all Cowboy fans can look forward to.
Kobe Newton, a guard out of Fullerton College joins the squad.
Newton led his team this past season with 13.7 points per game and seems to be confident from the three point line. He notched 170 three pointers in his two years at Fullerton.
Nigle Cook is another guard, from DME academy in Daytona Beach, Florida.
DME is one of the nations top ranked prep programs, and Cook turned down an offer from Villanova to call Laramie his new home.
Kael Combs, another freshman guard, is from Nixa, Missouri.
Combs had offers from D1 programs for both football and basketball. He stuck with basketball and now we’ll see what he has to offer for the Pokes.
Lastly, Akuel Kot, is a senior out of Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. He averaged 23.4 points with Fort Lewis, fourth in all of NCAA DII.
Coach Linder has made some serious improvements coming off of a quite forgettable season, and these new additions to the Cowboys look as promising as ever.
