Second successful Welcome Black event

On Wednesday, September 6th, Poke’s Pub hosted the second annual Welcome Black event. The event, which was a collaboration between UW’s Multicultural Affairs office and 7220 Entertainment, featured food, dancing, and mocktails.

Welcome Black was first put on in 2022 to welcome black students to campus, though the event was open to everyone. Melanie Vigil is the program director at Multicultural Affairs and spoke about the importance of events targeting specific marginalized demographics.

“An event like Welcome Black is really a recognition and acknowledgment
that everyone belongs here on campus,” said Vigil.

Gwen Dailey, 7220 Assistant Director of Activities, also spoke on the importance of events like Welcome Black.

“Welcome Black and other events focused on minority students are so important to have. These events create and build community for students. It shows students that they are not alone. It also
exposes students who are not of that identity to have a new experience,” said Dailey.

“I think it’s nice to meet new people at university and meet different people from different
countries and diversities,” said Welcome Black attendee and UW Symphony orchestra concertmaster Giovawna Volpi.

The event was attended by over 60 people, and featured DJ KayRich, a
California-based DJ who also performed at last year’s Welcome Black.

“I would say overall, it was a pretty big success,” said Vigil.

Dailey echoed this sentiment of success. “It was a positive experience for all who came. Regardless of attendance number I consider a successful event one in which students are able to have a good time, connect with others, and are engaging in the event.”

“The music is really good and it’s just nice to relax after a long day,” said Volpi.
