100 Years of Homecoming: History of the Golden Boot competition

The University of Wyoming, in conjunction with the UW Alumni Association, came together to celebrate 100 years of Homecoming. During Homecoming week, the Alumni Association hosted sporadic events that were geared toward students and graduates.

One of the events occurring throughout the week was the Golden Boot Competition. The Golden Boot Competition consisted of team members from student organizations that signed up to compete on behalf of their organizations.

Each organization was awarded points throughout the week that were earned by participating in a series of challenges all week long.

Participants scattered around campus in search of horseshoes every day of Homecoming week which were part of ASUW’s Horseshoe Hunt.

Other mini games within the Golden Boot Competition were UW Giving Day, a community service event; a social media competition, where organizations were required to submit social media posts; and a Homecoming Sing competition where students rewrote lyrics to songs and submitted a performance of their new song.

Among other games in the Golden Boot Competition was a Homecoming Space Decorating challenge.
In this challenge, the contestants were given permission to decorate any parts of campus.
Sororities that were participating in the challenge took matters into their own hands by decorating the outside of their houses.

Tri Delta decorated the outside of their house with a white banner that had a football, in support of UW football.

Chi Omega raised a big, black and gold banner between their pillars in front of their doorway. The banner featured shimmering, gold letters, and a commemoration to celebrating 100 years of Homecoming.

All of these Fraternity and Sorority Life chapters find their dedication to decor, although at some times, controversial, for Homecoming rooted as far back as the 1930s, of which passerby can see photographs on display at the American Heritage Center at this time.
