The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball team swept the San Jose State Spartans this Thursday in a rocking UniWyo Sports Complex to earn their second straight win in Mountain West conference play. The win gives them a 2-4 mark in conference play and a 13-4 overall record.
The Cowgirls got off to a hot start in the opening set of the game, jumping out to an early 11-5 lead. The Spartans found a spark towards the end of the set, however, as they attempted to crawl back into the game. The Cowgirls proved to be too much, though, as they ended up takin the set by a score of 25-18.
The Cowgirls had a slower start to the second set, finding themselves down early by a score of 2-7. The Cowgirls would immediately use a 7-2 run of their own to tie the game up at 9-9, but couldn’t find themselves ahead of the Spartans until they strung together a 6-0 from 16-17 to pull ahead and eventually earn another 25-18 win on the set.
The third and final set of the series saw the Cowgirls and the Spartans locked in a tight battle, as the Spartans, at times, found themselves pulling ahead and it looked as if they could take the final set. The Cowgirls would persevere and tie the game up at 22-22, and would score 3 in a row to finish the set and series off, winning the final set by a score of 25-22.
The Cowgirls had a decent outing offensively, recording a .231 hitting percentage on the game. It was the Cowgirl defense that shined, as they held the Spartans to a rough .086 hitting percentage on the game. The Cowgirls also played a much cleaner game than the Spartans, tabbing only 14 errors compared to the Spartans’ 27.
The Cowgirls were lead offensively by Corin Carruth with 9 kills on the game, and Rylee Schulz paced her with 8 kills. Kasia Partyka had 28 assists on the game.
Defensively, Sarah Halcomb lead the Cowgirls with 4 blocks. Tierney Barlow was just behind her with 3 on the game. Sierra Grizzle also had 10 digs.
The Cowgirls hit the road for their next conference game, heading to Albuquerque, NM to take on the New Mexico Lobos. The game is slated to start at 6:30 next Thursday.
