While it’s already mid-October, the Cowboys are taking just their second road trip of the season this weekend to play the undefeated Air Force Falcons. It’s the third Mountain West matchup for the Pokes. The Cowboys and Falcons are ranked 27th and 28th in the nation respectively, but both are gunning for the coveted top 25 designation.
Most notably, Air Force boasts the number one rushing offense in the country. Currently, they have over 76 more yards per game on the ground than any other Division 1 team. This is due to an incredible running back room, as well as a mobile QB. Five Falcons have rushed for over 150 yards this season, most notably RB Emmanuel Michel(#4) and QB Zac Larrier(#9).
Additionally, Air Force’s defense is 9th in the country in terms of points allowed per game, and 5th in yards per game. Both sides of the Falcons’ team have helped them win 5 straight to start the season, with their last three wins coming over Mountain West opponents.
The Pokes certainly have their work cut out for them, and an injury to star RB Harrison Waylee(#4) doesn’t help. Waylee went down on the Cowboy’s last possession last week, and limped off the field aided by two trainers. Coach Bohl doesn’t believe the leg injury to be season ending, but Waylee is day-to-day and questionable to play against Air Force.
QB Andrew Peasley(#6), winner of Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week last week, looks to continue his strong play. After a fantastic first half against Fresno State, Peasley cooled down, but still ended up passing for 3 TDs and 183 yards.
The Cowboys defense has allowed less rush yards per game than pass yards this season, but the Falcons rush attack will be their biggest challenge thus far. Nevertheless, the front line for the Pokes is ready to get to work.
The game begins at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13th, at the USAF Academy in Colorado and will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
