Lacrosse has been called the fastest game on two feet. The Wyoming women’s lacrosse club is a member of U.S. Lacrosse and participates in the Women’s Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League, division two, playing in eastern conferences.
The goal of this team serves to provide a meaningful, competitive lacrosse experience for those who have come to the University of Wyoming and want the camaraderie this sport brings.
Whether a seasoned player or a fledgling lax-er the team welcomes everyone from preseason up to regular season. The team gets the opportunity to travel around other destinations in the Rocky Mountain Region such as: Colorado, Utah, and Montana.
“I was initially drawn to the team in the first pre-season meeting. The girls immediately welcomed me and joining seemed like a great opportunity to have fun playing a sport and get to travel,” Meg Mauch, first year architectural engineering major, said.
While lacrosse doesn’t have the same level of interest football brings, women from all different areas and backgrounds have the opportunity to come together on the field and partake in the fast pace competition this unique sport brings.
Ingrid Martiez, a third year player for the university, said, “I was excited to learn a new sport and I found it as a perfect way to be involved on campus and get outside after my classes.”
The club motivates players to get out and move all year round. It is advertised as a two season sport, but their main tournaments and practices are in the spring. Women’s lacrosse team acknowledges that school always comes first, so the club usually practices only around 2-3 times a week with about four tournaments in regular season.
With it being a student run sport organization there’s lots of connections made throughout all of campus when going through this club sport.
“As the president of the women’s club lacrosse team I truly just wanted to spread the love for lacrosse and bring a small piece of home with me and make more memories. We are a team of all different experience levels and we are able to come and play a sport we all enjoy or even want to learn,” Matilda Schiewe, the lacrosse President said.
