“And beyond that, people’s minds are made up more by group chats they have with each other and their personal friendships than they are made by the interests of their other senators or the work that’s done in committee or the interests of student larges or anything that might have a degree of pertinence to our job.”
McGuire is a history major with a dual minor in the Honors College and theatre and dance, and has intentions of focusing on his studies for the rest of the year.
“I’ve been considering, like auditioning for a show because with ASUW, I’ve never been able to do that and I’m literally a theatre minor. There’s been other organizations on campus that I’m interested in and that I want to support,” McGuire said.
“Involvement on campus is not ASUW. In fact, ASUW, I would argue, is really low on the list of things to participate in to be involved on campus right. And there are so many student orgs and there are so many programs and things that I can be a part of and can support to create tangible impacts right now.”
McGuire stated that his original interest in ASUW came from friends who were already involved in the program, including Vice President Jessica Petiri who also announced her resignation this week.
The Branding Iron also extended an invitation to Petiri but declined.
McGuire wanted to note that while the culture of ASUW needs to see change, he did not want to end on a bad note.
“All of us are ASUW, and when we begin to act like it, when we begin to make decisions as if every single one of us is a Senator and every single one of us has a say, things will get better.”
McGuire also highlighted that it is not solely the responsibility of the current administration, but for improvements to be made it is on the shoulders of all students.
“ASUW, almost by nature, is not able to do right when we have an administration that almost entirely changes every single year.”
“I don’t want to end this on a message of pessimism, or that ASUW is an unfixable system. The best way to fix it, the best course of action we have, is simply to try.”
“The best time to make a change was yesterday. The second best time is right now.”
