The Wyoming Cowboys lost to the UNLV Rebels 34-14 this Saturday, and moved to 6-4 on the season. A fast start by the Rebels was too much for the Pokes to overcome, and UNLV shut the Pokes down on both sides of the ball for the second half.
Wyoming got off to an incredibly bad start against the Rebels, allowing three straight touchdowns to UNLV. This was no thanks to their offensive performance, as the Pokes went three and out two times with a fumble in the first quarter.
Not until the second quarter was Wyoming able to get going offensively. After a fumble recovery at their 47 yard line, Peasley led the Wyoming offense down the field. He capped the strong drive with an incredible 32 yard TD run, weaving between the UNLV defenders on his way to the endzone.
After a quick back and forth between the teams, Wyoming once again got into UNLV territory. Peasley nearly scored a second rushing TD but was a half yard short. Fortunately, Wyatt Weiland ran it in the next play to make it 21-14, still in favor of UNLV.
The Pokes got the ball back right before half, but an Andrew Peasley toss was intercepted by UNLV at the goaline with twelve seconds left. Despite the miscue, Wyoming was able to bring the game back into reasonable distance before half after a tough first quarter.
The Rebels first three scores were on the ground, but they still boasted a strong pass game. It was UNLV QB Jayden Maiava who put the first points of the second half on the board with a 5-yard throw, putting the Pokes down two scores again.
Wyoming drove into field goal range as the game moved into the 4th quarter. However, Hoyland missed a 52-yard kick and gave the ball back to the Rebels. UNLV used their dynamic offense to continue running down the clock and tacked on a field goal with 7:41 left in the game.
The Rebels kicker added one more score before the night was finished, and UNLV came up victorious 34-14. The Rebels put up nearly 400 yards, using both strong rushing and passing to win by 20. Despite racking up nearly 300 yards themselves, Wyoming struggled to put points on the board, no thanks to two turnovers.
The Pokes will be glad to head back to Laramie for a matchup against Hawaii next week. The Cowboys are now 6-0 at home and 0-4 on the road this season, with two games remaining in their 2023 season.
