As the Wyoming Cowboys reveled in their nail biting win against Toledo last night, Coach Bohl and a handful of team leaders were still taking questions and reflecting on the game. While it was the last game for Bohl, Easton Gibbs, and Andrew Peasley, they still had lots to say about the future of their team and the direction that they believe the program is headed.
The talk naturally led to the position of quarterback, given the importance of having a talented arm to lead the team. For Wyoming, the future is Evan Svaboda, who already got to flash his skills and leadership on the impressive game winning drive for the Pokes.
The 6’5”, 245 pound sophomore is no stranger to Wyoming fans, as he has made appearances throughout the season, most notably starting against Texas in September. Several times he has been able to step up when needed and move the ball effectively, as he showed in the Arizona Bowl.
Coach Bohl thinks that Svaboda has great potential. “Evan has a very strong arm and I think that he could put the ball in different places that very few quarterbacks can,” Bohl said. “He still is somewhat raw but Andrew [Peasley] has done a good job mentoring him,” he continued.
During his long career, Bohl has coached many players and quarterbacks, including NFL QBs Carson Wentz and Josh Allen. “I’m not saying I have good eyes but I have good eyes when it comes to quarterbacks as far as throwing the ball,” Bohl said, “I think [Svaboda] can do that and he’s learning how to play.”
Peasley shared a similar sentiment, and made comparisons to other big names at the position. “I’ve seen three quarterbacks in person that can really sling the ball,” Peasley said. “Jordan Love…Josh Allen, and Evan,” he remembered. There is no doubt that Wyoming believes that their team will be in good hands.
As far as the defense goes, Easton Gibbs voiced that he thinks they are set up for success. “There is so much potential,” he said. “We got some young folks that have been really grinding,” Gibbs continued.
Under Bohl, many great players have spent 4 years with the program and improved year after year. But it’s not just Bohl that makes this happen, it’s the whole system that he has built. “It’s a developmental program,” Gibbs said. “It’s gonna be a talented unit again next year,” he finished.
For Pokes fans, the future isn’t the first thing on their minds right now, as they enjoy celebrating a great season. However, come next fall, there’s no doubt that their emotions towards the new era of Cowboys football will be hopeful.
