Cowgirls lead wire-to-wire in dominant win over Utah State

The Wyoming Cowgirls dominated Utah State to earn the season sweep over the Aggies. The win moves the Cowgirls to 14-8 on the year and 9-2 in conference, just one game behind UNLV in the conference standings.

Both teams would have a bit of a sluggish start, but the Cowgirls would open the game with a 4-0 lead within the first four minutes of the game. The Aggies would answer but the Cowgirls would go on a quick 5-0 with Emily Mellema hitting her first shot from distance. Maren McKenna would also cash in a three as the Cowgirls were hitting shots late in the first half and would end on another 7-0 run.

The Cowgirls would continue to streak in the second quarter, as Allyson Fertig and Malene Pederson would give the Cowgirls a 25-10 lead midway through the quarter. The Aggies would fight back, but McKenna would hit another three and a free throw to push the lead to 15 at 31-15. The Cowgirls would eventually head into halftime with a 33-18.

Both teams would again start out the third quarter cold, as neither team could get any consistent offense rolling. The Aggies would go on a small run midway through the quarter to make the lead 39-28 for the Cowgirls, but both Marta Savic and Ola Ustowska would but an end to that as Ustowska would beat the shot clock with a nice stepback three to extend the lead back out at 44-31. The Aggies would continue to try and comeback, but Pederson would end the half with her first three and the Cowgirls maintained their lead at 48-33 heading into the final quarter of play.

The Cowgirls would come out hot in the final quarter, and they’d gain their largest lead of the night at 62-38. The Cowgirls wouldn’t score the rest of the night but wouldn’t need to, as the Aggies would go on an irrelevant 9-0 run to end the game as the final score was 62-47 in favor of the Cowgirls.

The Cowgirls were led offensively by Fertig, as she netted 13 points to go along with a team-high 8 rebounds. Pederson paced her with double figures with 10 points as well. Freshman Maren McKenna would come off the bench and score 9 points to go along with 5 rebounds to lead the Cowgirls’ bench.

The Cowgirls hit the road in their next contest to take on Boise State, the game set to tip off at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
