The Beavers defeated the Cowboys decisively in a hard fought contest, winning 34-6. The Pokes held in the matchup early but dropped their last 5 faceoffs of the night.
The Oregon State Beaver’s trip to Laramie this Saturday marked the last conference dual of the season for the Pokes. The evening began with a close match between Garrett Ricks of Wyoming and Gabe Whisenhunt of OSU in the 133 weight class. Whisenhunt got up early, but in an exciting third round Ricks scored a takedown to make it 12-9. Whisenhunt held on for the Beavers however, and put them up 3-0 to open the night.
Cole Brooks would also suffer defeat to the #14 ranked Cleveland Belton, which took OSU to a 6-0 lead. Wyoming would put itself on the board in the third match, with Gabe Willochell securing a victory over the #17 ranked Nash Singleton, controlling the mat for almost the whole match to win 6-1. After a Sloan Swan loss however, the Beavers went back up to a 9-3 lead.
Not wanting to fall behind too much, Cooper Voorhees earned a tough win over Isaiah Crosby of OSU, holding on in the third round for a 4-1 win. With that, the Pokes were only down by 3 at halftime.
That would be all the scoring for Wyoming however. After another close match in the 174 weight class going to Oregon State, the Pokes would suffer 4 straight agonizing defeats. Ducca and Novak lost early with their opponents both scoring 20 on them, and Zimmer and Catlin were both pinned to give the Beavers a huge margin of victory.
#10 Jore Volk, the highest ranked wrestler for Wyoming, was slated to wrestle last in the 125 class but was replaced after the Pokes went down big.
The Pokes are now 7-7 this season and 5-5 in conference competition. Wyoming will host the Cowboy Shootout tourney next weekend ahead of the BIG12 Championships next month.
