The Wyoming Cowgirls dominated wire to wire against the San Jose State Spartans, ending a four game losing streak.
The Cowgirls put on an impressive offensive display, particularly from beyond the arc as they’d hit a season high 15 threes in the game, a welcome sight as the Cowgirls have struggled with poor perimeter shooting during their four game losing stretch.
The Cowgirls would open the game on a 10-2 run, catching fire early with two threes from Ola Ustowska and Malene Pederson. Tess Barnes would knock down a pair of triples early as well, but that’d be answered by the Spartans with a pair of threes of their own, as they’d get themselves back in the game as the Cowgirl lead was 16-13. The Cowgirls wouldn’t let off the gas, as freshmen Maren McKenna and Madi Symons would both notch their first triples of the night as the Cowgirls had a 23-17 lead to end the first quarter of play.
The Cowgirls were quickly able to answer a hot first quarter offensively with an even better second quarter, as they’d continue their three point barrage and then some to quickly jump out to 50 points, with Barnes in particular catching fire in the quarter. The Spartans wouldn’t be able to keep up, as the Cowgirls would take a 51-30 lead at halftime.
The Cowgirls continued to impress offensively in the third quarter, making their first two three point attempts as it seemed they were on pace to score 100 in the game as they’d enjoy another 20 plus point quarter, extending their lead out to 31 at 75-44 at the end of the third quarter.
The Cowgirls would finally let off the gas pedal in the final quarter of play, as the Spartans would end up outscoring the Cowgirls by 16 in the final quarter of play to make the score just a bit closer, as the Cowgirls would ultimately win the contest by a score of 88-73.
The Cowgirls were extremely efficient from the field in the game, shooting at and over 60% from the field and from beyond the arc. The Cowgirls also outrebounded the Spartans by eight and had extended their lead as far as 35 in the game.
The Cowgirls were led by a 21 point performance from Barnes, who knocked down five triples in the game. Pederson followed with 14 points and Allyson Fertig had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Almost every Cowgirl who touched the floor in the game scored for the Cowgirls who enjoyed a balanced scoring effort.
The Cowgirls play in their final home game of the season on Saturday against Fresno State, the game set to tip off at 1 p.m.
