The Wyoming Cowgirls took a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter against San Diego State but would allow 25 points to the Aztecs to drop the contest 58-55. Despite leading for most of the game, the Cowgirls fell flat in the last quarter defensively to finish out their regular season.
In the first half, Allyson Fertig would put up 12 points, nearly half of the Cowgirls total, to put them on top by 7, 25-18. The Cowgirls kept San Diego out of the paint, and the Aztecs relied on jumpers and three pointers to keep themselves in the game.
In the third period, Fertig would continue her great offensive performance, and score 7 more. The Aztecs began to sink more buckets than the previous two quarters, but the Cowgirls still outpaced them to take their lead to 10 heading into the final period.
From there, they continued to battle back and forth but Wyoming kept the contest out of reach and with 6:45 remaining, they were up by 11 points. The Aztecs however, put together a 15 point run, including 11 free throws, to go up by 4 in the last minutes of the game. The Cowgirls tried to claw back at the last second but it was too little too late, and the Aztecs completed their unlikely comeback, winning 58-55.
Despite the ugly loss, the Cowgirls retain the #3 seed in the Mountain West and will play next Monday, in a matchup with either Boise State or Utah State to kickoff their 2024 tournament run.
