The Cowgirls received their third straight invitation in as many seasons to compete in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) last Sunday.
This also marks the 12th time in program history that the Cowgirls will compete in the postseason tournament. The Cowgirls have even won the WNIT once in 2007 and hold a 20-10 overall record in WNIT games.
The Cowgirls’ regular season concluded with a tough loss at San Diego State, where they were outscored 25-12 in the final quarter of play while holding an 11 point lead with under seven minutes to play.
The Cowgirls’ run at the Mountain West tournament was much of the same, as they dropped their quarterfinal matchup versus Boise State in similar fashion as the Broncos outscored them 22-10 in the final quarter of play.
That loss saw the Cowgirls finish their season at 16-14, finishing in third place in the Mountain West with a league record of 11-7.
This year saw the Cowgirls play one of the hardest schedules in the nation, as they hosted teams like BYU, Nebraska and Creighton and went on the road to play Gonzaga and Oklahoma State in the non-conference portion of their schedule, something that certainly attributed to their success in league play and can help them in the WNIT that features a host of very good teams.
The Cowgirls will begin their WNIT run with a first round bye and will play either UTSA or Northern Colorado where they will look to get past their fourth quarter woes of recent.
The tip-off time and date has yet to be released, but all second round games will be played between March 23-26.
