After a campaign last year that resulted in the first Mountain West tennis regular season title for the Cowgirls and saw them only lose one conference matchup, the Cowgirls have experienced some up and down results in their ensuing season but are still in the chase for a second Mountain West title.
The Cowgirls will be looking for a turnaround in the Mountain West tournament this year should they make it, as they dropped their opening game of the Mountain West tournament to San Jose State after topping the standings.
The Cowgirls opened their season with a tough trip to Oklahoma where they’d come out with a 1-3 record, dropping games to Oklahoma, Tulsa and Louisiana Tech.
The Cowgirls would enjoy a solid road swing the next week, where they were able to notch some big wins but still sat at a losing record after losing to Colorado at 3-4.
The Cowgirls would then fire off five consecutive wins after that for their longest winning streak this season but after a pair of losses right after the Cowgirls would end their non-conference schedule with a 9-6 record.
The Cowgirls success in the non conference has already translated to their conference portion of their schedule, as they currently sit at 5-2 in the Mountain West, which places them towards the top of the standings. They need to remain in the top eight of the conference to play in the Mountain West tournament.
The Cowgirls have already just outlasted the efforts of UNLV and Fresno State, who they just barely edged by a score of 4-3 in each games.
The Cowgirls have also dominated in conference play, not allowing Utah State a single point and taking down Boise State 4-1. Most recently, the Cowgirls dominated San Jose State by a score of 4-1.
They have also struggled, though, as a road swing at Nevada saw them drop a close battle 3-4 against the Wolfpack. The Cowgirls were also dominated by San Diego State, unable to notch a point in that road matchup.
With only three more games left on the Cowgirls’ schedule, they’ll look to continue their recent success and find themselves in position to make a run at this year’s Mountain West tennis championship tournament.
