Swimmers receive honors

The University of Wyoming swimming team continues to receive postseason awards, as the Cowgirl team earned a College Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America honor and four individual swimmers received the Scholar All-America awards.

The Cowgirl team earned the honor with a grade-point average of 3.02.

Brandon Fischer earned Scholar All-America honor, while Trevor LeValley, Jayce Calhoon and Morgan Hartigan earned honorable mention scholar all-america honors.

“To me, this is a big deal,” Wyoming Swimming Head Coach Tom Johnson said. “Individually, this is the most kids I can remember having on this list. It goes to show in our program that you can be both academically and athletically successful.”

Fischer, a native of Livermore, Calif., earned his first Scholar All-America honor with a 3.8 GPA during the 2011-12 season. Academically, Fischer was also named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Academic All-Conference team. He recently competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials posting personal-best times in the 100-and 200-meter breaststroke.

LeValley, a product of Lake Stevens, Wash., achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA majoring in chemical engineering and was awarded NSCAA Honorable Mention Scholar All-America honors. LeValley was also an Academic All-MPSF and Mountain West Scholar-Athlete honoree. He also swam for UW in the Olympic Trials swimming a personal-best time in the 400 individual medley.

Calhoon, hailing from Sweet Home, Ore., also earned Honorable Mention Scholar All-America honors for finishing the academic year with a 3.57 GPA. Like LeValley and Fischer, Calhoon also earned Academic All-MPSF honors. Calhoon recently swam in the Olympic Trials in the 200-meter backstroke.

Hartigan, from Cheyenne, earned honorable mention scholar all-america honors with a 4.0 GPA in kinesiology and health promotion. She was a member of the UW contingent to compete at the Olympic Trials racing in the 100-meter breaststroke.
