The count down to the Wyoming vs. Texas game started Friday afternoon on the flight to Texas when the pilot came on the intercom asking,
“Who here is a Texas fan?”
A good dozen or so yelled and howled their approval.
“How many Wyoming fans do we have on this flight?” the pilot asked. Again, another dozen or so, including myself, yipped and yelled our pride.
The pilot came back on the intercom and said the other pilot was a University of Wyoming graduate and said, “Go Pokes!”
That was when I knew this weekend would not just be any old game. It would be our fight to prove we belong and to show we have what it take to hang with the “big boys.”
All day Saturday it was a rare but welcome sight to catch a glimpse of gold or brown here and there while walking around and tailgating.
At game time, Texas fans were ready and the Cowboy fans were excited and proud to see what their team would do.
This game was a different one for me, growing up around Texas football. Walking into the stadium in a different color and cheering for the opposite team was an adrenaline pumping experience, like stealing cookies from the cookie jar before dinner.
On a hot 92 degree night in Austin, with 51 percent humidity, the Cowboys got the Longhorns sweating as they got on the scoreboard first with a 33 yard field goal kicked by Stuart Williams.
Throughout the first half, Wyoming kept coming back with answers to every touchdown and field goal Texas made, and kept fighting into the third quarter
“We played more physical this game which was one of our goals, to keep playing physical,” Head coach Dave Christensen said. “Our football team is a hungry football team. Our team is an eager football team,” he said.
Though the team was unsatisfied with the loss, it was encouraged, and victory for the Cowboys would have just been a bonus. They showed the Longhorns just what they are made of.
