In 1912, Dr. Clyde Duniway started his career at UW and in 1913 was inaugurated as the ninth president of UW. His wife, Caroline Duniway, founded the University Women’s Club in 1912.

Desserts to Die For has become an annual tradition for the club. This year it will be hosted from 7 – 9 p.m. Thursday at the UW Conference Center and Hilton Gardens Inn. It is open to women in the Laramie community who are interested in joining the club. Admission to the event is free, but donations are encouraged.

“Desserts to Die For is the main membership drive for the University Women’s Club,” Kelly Heck, president of the club, said. “However, club members are free to join throughout the year.”

“The Hilton Gardens caters the event,” Chamois Anderson said in an email, “and in the past has provided us with a wide assortment of tasty desserts.”

“I have no idea how long we have been hosting Desserts to Die For,” Anderson said, but if she had to venture a guess, she would say more than a decade would be an accurate estimate.

When the club was created, it was intended to provide a friendly gathering place for faculty wives and female faculty members. Today, it is open to all women within the Laramie community, including UW students. Their new mission is to “promote social interaction among the members, to welcome women new to the community, and to render assistance to UW and to the surrounding community,” Anderson said. “The club is a service and social club for residents of Laramie.”

“Club membership has ranged from 90 to 140 in recent years and includes women of all ages, professions and interests,” Heck said.

During the holiday’s, the club also presents a Holiday Home Tour. A portion of the proceeds from both events are used for UW scholarships for non-traditional women students.
