Cowgirl soccer team splits weekend games

The Cowgirls soccer team played a packed weekend as it took on the Colorado Buffaloes on Friday night and fought the Utah Valley Wolverines on Sunday.

The team played a tough game against Colorado, whose new coach is former UW head coach Danny Sanchez. Despite the numerous shot attempts made by Wyoming, the team fell to a 0-2 loss on its home turf. Outshooting the new Buffaloes squad by a 10-5 margin throughout most of the game, the Cowgirls were unable to land their scoring opportunities.

“I think we played with emotion and fought hard, but were unable to score when chances came our way,” said Wyoming Head Coach Pete Cuadrado. “When you’re playing a good team like Colorado, you can’t miss out on those.”

After the loss to Colorado, the team came back strong to win in overtime against the Utah Valley Wolverines.

Taking the lead 2-0 in the first thirteen minutes of the game, the team was on its way to victory. Midway through the first half, the Wolverines caught up to the Cowgirls, scoring three goals in a matter of five minutes, according to the Wyoming Athletics Department.

The remainder of the game was a tough battle for both teams as they went into overtime with a score of 3-3. A free kick made by player Liz O’Reilly one minute into overtime pushed the team to a 4-3 win.

“It was a nice effort from Liz to get that in and win the game for us,” said Cuadrado. “A win’s a win and we’ll take it no matter how it comes.”

The Cowgirls are set to begin their two-game road swing next weekend as they travel to Logan, Utah, for a final pre-conference match-up with Utah State before heading to UNLV Saturday, Sept. 29 to open the Mountain West season, according to Wyoming Athletics. Kickoff against Utah State is slated for 1 p.m.
