Members of the Recognized Student Organization funding board meet to discuss applications from several student organizations requesting funding from ASUW.

The Registered Student Organization funding board voted Monday to approve two cultural events, a concert for social justice, a prom for the gay community and one conference registration.

The RSO Funding Board gave initial approval for $10,850 for a concert, dance and party for the Indian holiday Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights. The Indian Students’ Association plans to bring in internationally renowned Bollywood singers and bring in food from an Indian restaurant in Fort Collins, Colo. The event organizers said they traveled to Colorado themselves to ensure the food was of the highest quality.

The International Justice Mission, a student organization dedicated to reducing atrocities like human trafficking, applied for $4,500.95 to bring in the band JUBILEE. JUBILEE is a Seattle-based non-profit that combines music with a message about reducing modern-day slavery. The funding board approved the amount.

Spectrum, a campus group that supports the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning students on campus, plans to host a “pink prom” event. The event is for students at UW and the larger Laramie area who may have never felt comfortable attending a formal dance with their partners. The board awarded $3,366.76 for the event.

The Brazilian Club requested $770 for a dance workshop set to the rhythm of Brazilian drums. The club will serve “wahakie,” a traditional Brazilian drink, along with other authentic treats.

The club plans to teach students to dance the samba, a dance from Brazil. Organizers for the group said the event was “a huge success” in years past.

“The samba workshops, even without the food, are well-attended,” ASUW Sen. Jaime Sheehan said.

The final dollar amount approved was for the pharmacy fraternity, Phi Delta Chi. The board decided to allocate $300 to attend a national conference on leadership in Kentucky. Phi Delta Chi representative Brandon Anderson said the conference would expand the brotherhood of the fraternity and also benefit the pharmacy school as a whole.

“They have a plan as to what they will learn at the conference and beyond,” RSO Funding Board Chair Hunter Christianson said.

Due to the large dollar amounts requested, the Indian Students’ Association, the International Justice Mission and Spectrum will appear before the ASUW Senate meeting Tuesday evening for final approval.
