The University of Wyoming broke ground on a $1.2 million indoor golf facility during a ceremony Saturday. The privately funded facility is intended to let golfers continue training during the Wyoming winter.

At the ground-breaking ceremony for UW’s Indoor Golf Facility on Saturday, University of Wyoming President Tom Buchanan told the audience, “The blowing dirt means construction, which means new things are happening. So smile, then brush your teeth later.”

Many of the donors for this project were in attendance as well as both the women’s and the men’s golfers. Tom Burman, UW’s Athletic Director, said this indoor golf facility is the second facility that has been privately raised, meaning no help from the university itself. All of the donors are people who care about UW’s golf teams and the community.

This facility, like the golf course, will be for the community, not just UW’s teams.

“This building really will be a community building, for our teams, the First Tee junior golf program, the High School competitors and the club members,” Men’s Golf Coach Joe Jensen said.

It truly was a team effort getting the money and donors for this project, and everyone under the tent was excited that the project had become a reality, Jensen said.

The $1.2 million facility is designed to include multiple indoor and outdoor hitting bays, locker rooms, study and meeting area, putting green and the latest technology like swing editing equipment. Its indoor design means the golfers can practice all year round.

“It takes a special kind of golf enthusiast to see the potential of the UW golf team,” Buchanan said.
