Junior Emily Wood and sophomore Samantha Stancato both shot their season lows of 75 (+2) for the University of Wyoming women’s golf team during Tuesday’s final round of the UNM Dick McGuire Invitational, according to the Wyoming Athletics Department.
The Cowgirls beat five teams during the final round with a 308, which was their second-lowest round of the fall. Overall, the team finished the event in 17th with a total of 956 (+80). Iowa State won the team title at 886 (+10) on the par-73 UNM Championship Course to top the 17-team field.
“From top to bottom, our short game was executed much better today,” UW head coach Josey Stender said. “We did a much better job of dealing with the holes we struggled with yesterday. Some of that was the wind dying down, but some of that was managing our misses. We missed in places that we could get up and down and save par.”
Wyoming Athletics reports that Wood’s season low put her total at 238 (+19) for a 76th-place tie, while Stancato finished at 243 (+24) in a tie for 83rd. Senior Dana Zamprelli was the top Cowgirl in the event after shooting a 77 (+4) in the final round for 236 (+17) overall in a tie for 69th place. Junior Stacey Blunt tallied an 81 (+8) in the third round to finish in 81st with a 241 (+22) and freshman Kathleen Kershisnik ended her first collegiate tournament with a 252 (+33) for 91st.
“Emily really didn’t play very different than she did yesterday, but she avoided the big numbers and had much more confidence in her short game,” Stender said. “Sam putted much better today and looked more confident and comfortable with her whole game.”
The Wyoming women have the rest of September off but will be returning to action at the Rose City Collegiate on Oct. 1-2 at the Langdon Farms Golf Club in Aurora, Ore.
“I’m proud that our girls were resilient today and played like the team I know they can be,” Stender said. “We’ll use the new few days to fine-tune some things and get more consistent to springboard us into the Oregon tournament.”
