The Wyoming cross country teams will participate in the 11th annual “Always a Cowboy” 8k run/5k walk at 9 a.m. Saturday at Undine Park in Laramie.
The event is an annual race held in memory of the eight Wyoming cross country student-athletes whose lives were taken on September 16, 2001. Undine Park is located at 5th Street and Ord in Laramie.
“It’s a way for our team to honor the eight athletes who lost their lives in the car accident,” Wyoming cross country coach Bryan Berryhill said. “It’s important to hold this event to remember those runners and to keep that memory alive so we are reminded of what’s most important in life. I think it will also help us remember to race hard at every event to honor those individuals.”
Occurring simultaneously, the races will be eight kilometers for runners and five kilometers for walkers. Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are invited and encouraged to participate in the event.
Awards will go to the first and second-place runners in each age category, as well as the top two overall men and women. There will also be awards given to the top two overall walkers. Everyone has a chance to win raffle prizes.
Entrance fees are $20 before 5 p.m. on Wed., Sept. 19, and $25 after the 19th leading up to the race. A registration form is available at the UW Cross Country web site.
All proceeds are donated to the University of Wyoming cross country and track and field programs.
