After being carted off the field during the Wyoming vs. Toledo game during its fourth quarter on Sept. 8, Cowboy quarterback Brett Smith has resumed his collegiate career here at UW.
Due to the concussion Smith received during the game, he was forced to miss the remainder of the Toledo game as well as the following home game against Cal Poly. However, Smith was able to return and help bring victory to the Cowboys on Saturday during their game against the Idaho Vandals.
Aside from having an impressive game Saturday, he has been in the spotlight for many sports news stories this week.
Smith was the Mountain West Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. He shared the award with Nevada junior running back Stephon Jefferson.
According the reports from the MW, Smith threw four career highs in passing yards (365) and touchdown passes (5) as he led Wyoming to a 40-37 overtime road win at Idaho. His 365 passing yards rank as the best single-game performance in the MW this season and the 18th best performance in the NCAA.
Not only did Smith manage to set personal bests in passing yards and touchdown passes in a single game, but his 387 yards of total offense moved him into 10th place on the Wyoming career total offense list with a total of 4,414 career yards, according to Wyoming Athletics.
Smith also received another honor for his play in the 40-37 overtime win at Idaho and was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. He was one of only 10 quarterbacks nationally to be honored by College Football Performance Awards as an Honorable Mention selection for the top quarterback performance of the week.
Smith was additionally selected by the Manning Award as one of its nine “Stars of the Week”, according the Wyoming Athletics. Because Smith was selected for this, he is now eligible for this week’s Manning Award Player of the Week, which is determined by fan voting.
He was the only sophomore in the nation on this year’s Manning Award Preseason Watch List. The Manning Award honors the top collegiate quarterback in the nation at the conclusion of each season.
As Smith continues his season this fall, fans, teammates and coaches are all excited to see where he will lead the team.
