The University of Wyoming Athlete of the Week is Clinton Boutelle, a junior and communications major on the men’s golf team. He found his talent for golf at age 11 and improved throughout high school.
In high school, besides playing golf he also played hockey. Boutelle lettered three times in high school for hockey. His favorite NHL team is the San Jose Sharks, but it was pretty fun to watch Kings winning the Stanley Cup this year, he said.
This year, Boutelle’s individual goals are being accountable and being a teammate. Boutelle said he wants to take responsibility for his spot on the team and produce the scores and expectations that come with that.
He plans to build on last season’s successes by improving his short game. Boutelle also said he has been known to hit some tee shots a little wayward sometimes and he wants to improve on his driving accuracy.
Using his imagination, visualizing shots and then executing them how he pictured is his favorite part of being on the golf course. It’s a very satisfying feeling, he said.
Boutelle said he needs to improve on shooting when there is a hazard on the left and he has a driver in his hand.
Boutelle hopes to play on the Augusta golf course and the new and improved Jacoby Golf Course. His favorite golf courses to play on were the Shooting Star in Jackson, Wyo., Bryans Park in Greensboro, N.C., and Tradition in Palm Desert, Calif.
He said his favorite professional golfer is Tiger Woods, but he also likes watching Dustin Johnson or Phil Mickelson solely based on the shots they can hit around the greens. He likes watching the professionals, but does not necessarily have favorites, Boutelle said.
As a communications major, Boutelle said he does not have any set plans after college except to get a job he loves and not get kicked out of it.
He represents his home state, Wyoming, calling it a privilege to be at the UW and represent the state where he was born and raised. Boutelle said he likes the idea that the team is (for the most part) regionally based. It gives us them the opportunity to compete against the best in the nation and say they are from Wyoming, he said.
