With only one year under his belt studying and playing at the University of Wyoming, senior linebacker Korey Jones is one of four captains on the football team. Jones also is this week’s student athlete of the week.
Jones grew up in Fort Collins and started playing football at six years old. His father played for Colorado State University, and Jones never thought he would play for CSU’s rival.
He first started playing for Garden City Community College in Kansas.
“GCCC prepared me for Division I football by treating me like I was in [a] Division I program already,” Jones said. “I was held to high standard and high expectations and was expected to handle things a certain way and it has transferred over to Division I.”
Jones has held many different positions while playing football through the years. This is only his fourth year playing linebacker. He is the No. 1 player at the weak-side linebacker slot.
Jones grew up playing running back and safety. He also said he had some time playing at defensive end when he was in high school.
Jones is one of the four captains this year, but he says being captain does not affect how he plays. He plays just as hard and feels just as much pressure as everyone else on the team. He performs just as good, captain or not, he said.
Besides playing football, Jones is a Social Science major and says he hopes to coach. He said he also hopes to visit Africa some day.
The conference portion of the season is coming up this weekend when UW plays Nevada in Reno at 5:05 p.m. on Saturday. Jones’ personal expectations are the same as the team’s coming into the season: to win a conference championship. UW will enter the game with a 1-3 record, while Nevada enters with a 4-1 record.
