CACS presents second annual Majors Fair

Many students find choosing a major more difficult than deciding what college they want to attend. They can sometimes feel pressure from family and friends to pick the direction their lives will take.

The Center for Advising and Career Services is presenting the second annual Majors Fair from 12-1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Union Ballroom.

The event is a “one stop shop” for students who are undecided or thinking about changing their major, Steven Suder, an academic advisor at the center, said. Students can literally talk to someone about a major in English one minute and talk to someone else about sociology the next.

Every college and most majors on campus will be represented in the fair. It is a great opportunity for students to start a dialog with someone from the college or major they are interested in. Ask them about classes; find out about job opportunities in the field, Suder said.

Students who are unable to attend the Majors Fair, are welcome visit the Center for Advising and Career Services on the second floor of Knight Hall to meet with one of the counselors. They can help guide students and offer them options.

CACS offers a three prong formula for student success. First, they help undecided students find an academic direction. The counselors find out what interests a student has and offers suggestions for classes and majors that fall around their interests.

The second prong is career counseling. Students are guided to what careers best suit their wants and needs. Based on a student’s answers to questionnaires, the counselors are able to point the student to careers that will be satisfying and enjoyable.

Finally, CACS offers career services for upper classmen getting ready to graduate. The counselors assist in every aspect of the job search from resume and cover letter writing to improving interview skills. “We record students during mock interviews and then talk about what they did well and what can be improved,” Suder said.

Suder also encourages students to talk to someone within the department they are interested in. The faculty advisors are not only there to help students pick their classes for the next semester. They can also help point students in a direction that might lead to a career they find fulfilling and satisfying.
