The Associated Students of the University of Wyoming at Tuesday’s senate meeting approved $17,350 for three events, which will include International Education Week, a Turkish night of celebration and a military ball.
The International Student Association was approved for $7,550 to host a series of events and activities during International Education Week. International Education Week is an awareness and education initiative put on by the U.S. Department of State, hosted with the purposes of promoting internationalization and creating a global environment on campus.
The activities will include a cultural display in the Wyoming Union, a brown bag lunch with special speakers, an international dinner in Washakie Hall, a documentary about Kenya and a dinner teaching international etiquette.
“This event has a history of having an excellent turnout. I hear the etiquette dinner is an incredible experience,” said Sen. Kia Murdoch.
The motion passed unanimously.
The UW Turkish Student Association received $7,200 to host a night of celebration in April 2013, which will honor the Turkish Independence Day and its children’s holiday. The evening will have Turkish cuisine, music and presentations on history. The event was last hosted at the University of Wyoming six years ago.
Senators were pleased with how far ahead the campus group was planning its event.
“I would like to applaud them planning ahead for April,” Murdoch said. “They are doing their homework.”
The Cadet Club, a joint campus group for students involved with the Army and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps, was approved $2,600 for a military ball.
Murdoch voiced concerns over students who are not members of the Air Force and Army ROTC programs being able to attend and participate, while Sen. Brody Tate and Taylor True testified to the groups’ presence on campus. Army and Air Force ROTC representatives assured the senate that around half the students attending the event would not be ROTC members.
The Cadet Club secured significant outside funding to cover the $9,000 catering budget and a speaker who is influential in the space industry.
In other news, ASUW tabled two bills to gather more information.
A resolution in support of changes to the general education requirements at UW was tabled until student reactions could be gauged. The Student Outreach and Policy Committee will be gathering student feedback on from 12-1 p.m. Thursday in the Wyoming Union Family Room.
A bill that could require campus groups seeking ASUW funding to advertise events on the UW general calendar, currently known as Tzolkin, also has been tabled due to possible changes to the program’s name and operating procedures. The committee tabled the bill until the changes are resolved.
