Taking the force out of the Crimson Tide

Last weekend marked the fall of the reign of the University of Alabama’s football team. The weekend made me do a happy dance because Texas A&M (the new meat in the South Eastern Conference) beat Alabama (the big bad elephant of the SEC).

The top three teams now in the BCS standings and the AP poll are fighting to be No. 1 and 2 so they can make it to the national championship bowl. The top three, Kansas State, Oregon and Notre Dame, all have 10-0 season records, but which will be on top with a target on its back?

In the BCS standings, Kansas State is No. 1, Oregon follows and Notre Dame is ranked third. However, in the AP poll Oregon and Kansas State switch spots, making Oregon No. 1.

Notre Dame seems to think this year is a new beginning, as the last few years have not been kind to it. However, I hope it will stay below the top two. This is just not its year.

But, Hallelujah! Alabama is No. 4, and hopefully the top three teams will keep up their undefeated seasons so Alabama doesn’t come back. Nick Saban is a coach who I do not respect.

He will run up the score and yell at his. One of the rules for any coach is that it is courtesy not to run up the score when your team is already winning with a two- or three-touchdown cushion. Saban ignores this rule and runs it up anyway.

Georgia (No. 5) and Florida (No. 6) do not worry me as much. They are good teams this year and deserve to be where they are in the BCS standings. Louisiana State University needs to get its butt in gear, though. LSU has the potential to be in the top four but has not used it yet.

The rest of the top 25 does not bother me so much until someone starts looking at where most of the top 10 teams are from, conference-wise. It is almost disturbing when more than half of the teams in the top 10 are from the SEC. The four teams that are not are Florida State (No. 10) from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the top three teams. Kansas State is from the Big 12, Oregon is from the Pac 12 and Notre Dame is a IA- independent.

I miss the days when the Big 12 was the big conference on campus, but now the tables have turned. The bright light in all of this? Alabama is no longer the big bad elephant at No. 4. Keep it up, Wildcats, Ducks and Fighting Irish.
