University of Wyoming alumnus Master Sgt. Greg Strom was inducted into the United States Army Marksmanship Unit Hall of Fame on Oct. 20.
The induction was paired with a celebration of the United States Army Marksmanship Unit’s 56 birthday. More than 250 soldiers, veterans and civilians gathered in honor and celebration.
Strom was one of three former United States Army Marksmanship Unit members to be inducted into the 2012 Hall of Fame. Major Verle Wright and Sgt. First Class Gerald “Hook” Boutin also were honored.
“The AMU is a special organization because its members are the best in the Army at what they do,” Strom said in an interview with Michael Molinaro at the ceremony. “Because of the unit’s unique mission, its members in my opinion are actually ambassadors and interact with more organizations than any other unit in the U.S. Military.”
Strom entered the Army in 1978 and served in the United States Army Marksmanship Unit until 1988. Strom is one of the most successful service rifle shooters in the unit’s history. He is not only a distinguished Rifleman, but also holds membership in the President’s Hundred, and in the NRA 495 and 790 clubs.
Strom is the only shooter to win the U. S. Army Championships, the Interservice Championships and the National Championships in the same year.
The University of Wyoming always has been a home to Strom. At age 14, he started his first job working at Washakie. In his almost-five years employed there, Strom worked as a line runner, apprentice cook and catering supervisor.
Strom attended the University of Wyoming for three years from 1976-78. During his time at the university, he majored in accounting and was a member of the Varsity Smallbore Rifle team.
“Part of the reason I joined the army is because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do,” Strom said.
Strom’s involvement with the university spans across generations. His father, Roy Strom, worked with the plumbing shop at the university, retiring after 35 years of service. Strom currently works as a custodian in the health sciences building under the supervision of George McGinnis.
“Hopefully working at UW can be my first and my last job,” Strom said.
