UW men will compete for Mr. Wyoming on Saturday by modeling their most
fashionable formal and active wear.

Part of belonging to a fraternity or sorority is philanthropy — raising money or collecting donations for charitable organizations. Kappa Kappa Gamma came up with a unique way to fulfill their fundraising duties.

They host a Mr. Wyoming Pageant.

“This will be the ninth year we’ve done the pageant,” Carly Hennig, philanthropy chair for KKG, said. The pageant will be at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Arts and Sciences Auditorium.

“The theme this year is ‘Stuck in the ‘90s’,” Hennig said.

The opening dance routine for the pageant will feature the contestants dressed in their best gear from the 1990s. Even the emcees are going to get into the theme by dressing as characters from “Saved by the Bell,” she said.

All of the proceeds from this event will go to the Albany County Red Cross. People and businesses can give donations in three ways. KKG sent out letters to local businesses and so far has raised more than $3000 in donations.

Throughout the week a table has been set up in the Wyoming Union where students can drop votes by way of donations for the contestant they want to win. This year there are 12 contestants competing for the title of Mr. Wyoming.

The final way to donate is through ticket purchases. Tickets can be purchased at the table in the Wyoming Union or at the door.

Local businesses also have donated the prizes for the contestants and the winner will get the honor of being Mr. Wyoming for a year.

“It’s a sort of mock pageant for men,” Hennig said.

Contestants will compete in formal wear and active wear. There also will be a talent competition and a dance contest.

When the contestants filled out their applications for the pageant, they were asked to list their likes and hobbies. Based on their answers, each one will be asked to answer a question.

Contestants volunteered to take part in the pageant. “They donate their time and themselves to help us,” Hennig said.
