The Cowboys are on a three-game winning streak going into this weekend’s game against San Diego State.
The Cowboys rocked and rolled over UNLV on Saturday for a 28-23 victory. Quarterback Brett Smith threw 412 yards in the game. His passing yardage, a career high, was in the top 10 for UW’s single-game history and marked the 11th time a UW quarterback tallied 400-plus yards through the air in a single game, according to UW athletics.
The UNLV game was a back-and-forth kind of game. For every UW touchdown or field goal, the Rebels answered back with one of their own.
However, the Cowboys’ last game will likely be the most difficult of the season. San Diego State has a 6-1 record in the conference, and the Cowboys have a 3-4 Mountain West record.
If the Cowboys want a tied season (4-4 in MW conference), they need to win their game against San Diego State.
San Diego has both a winning conference record and last weekend off to practice and prepare for their last game, but the Cowboys have the momentum of a three-game winning streak on their side.
If Brett Smith can throw more than 400 yards again and his receivers can continue completing passes and running into the in-zone, UW should be able to put points on the board.
However, defense wins the game. The defense needs to make sure to stop SDSU’s running and passing. If UW’s defense can keep stopping and blocking SDSU like it has been for the past three games, the Cowboys have a chance.
Kick off is set for 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
