Wyoming basketball teams undefeated in preseason play

Although the men and women’s basketball teams have not started their official seasons, they have been outstanding in their preseason performance, with both undefeated up to this point.

In their preseason, the Cowboys have a 4-0 overall record coming off their most recent win, 67-60, against Southern.

In the team’s recent game in the Global Sports Hoops Showcase, senior forward and star player Leonard Washington earned the MVP title. Washington’s 17 points in the game were his fourth double figures this season. He also notched eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks, leading him to his MVP honor, according to UW Athletics.

“I was very pleased to see Leonard Washington get MVP because he took control of this game and control of this team down the home stretch,” men’s basketball head coach Larry Shyatt said.

The women’s team also has seen triumph thus far. In their most recent game against the Denver Pioneers, the Cowgirls recorded an 81-66 win, bumping their record to 2-0. All the team starters finished the game having scored in double-figures.

“To have five players in double-figures in scoring, put 81 points up on the board, moved the ball. We were aggressive on the floor and knew we had to be.” said Cowgirl basketball head coach Joe Legerski.

Sophomore Kayla Woodward led the team, finishing with a season high of 20 points and four rebounds in just 34 minutes of play, according to the athletics department. Cowgirls Alison Gorrell, Kaitlyn Mileto, Ashley Sickles and Chaundra Sewell also played strong games.

The Cowgirls are expected to hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to California for two games in the Pepperdine Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday. For the Cowboys, the team is scheduled to continue its season in Greeley, Colo., against Northern Colorado on Wednesday.
