IFC looks for change

A new semester and a new year bring a fresh set of faces to the Interfraternity Council. The IFC is a group where all fraternities are represented.  Some of the activities sponsored by the IFC include Greek Week, regional leadership conferences, guest speakers and formal recruitment. Leading Wyoming’s Fraternities into the year is IFC President James Meyer, along with advisors Kate Steiner and Jen Banks.

The new officers this year are as follows: President: James Meyer; Treasurer: Jake Carpenter; Secretary: John Ajax; Chief Justice: Hunter Hebestreet; Public Relations Chairman: Shane Bell; and ASUW Liaison: Sean McQuade.  The justices serving on the Judicial Board with Hebestreet are Andrew Olson, Daniel Latimer, Brendon Cline and Andrew Holcomb.

The positions of Vice President, Recruitment Chairman, Scholarship Chairman, Panhellinic Liaison and three alternates to the Judicial Board will be filled at a later date.

Last fall’s service projects by Greek members boast over $10,000 in donations to local and national causes, according to Wyoming’s Greek Life website.

“I was proud of the work that was done to bring back a functioning Judicial Board,” former IFC president Tyler Kirby said. Kirby said his favorite part of last year was homecoming.

“It was very exciting to see all the chapters spending time with their alumni and the pride that every member had in their fraternity,” he said.

Meyer served last year as Vice President for the IFC. For him, leadership is not a new trick.

“I’m looking forward to expanding communication with the University, student organizations and various campus entities. Also, I’m looking to create more accountability,” said Meyer. But he also has some changes in mind.

“I want to build new bridges, and at the same time repair the ones we’ve burned.  I feel the community is limited by stereotypes and we haven’t done enough to expel them,” he said.

Greek Life may not be for you, but how do you know that unless you check it out?  Fraternities and Sororities welcome all with open arms. All it takes is a knock on the door. For the chapters that do not have houses, a quick visit to the Greek Life Office will put you in contact with a member of the organization, and anyone wearing Greek letters will be happy to answer any questions.  There are several Fraternities and Sororities at the University of Wyoming, so it is possible for students to find one that fits their style and represents their personal beliefs.
