Over the weekend the Wyoming Cowboys wrestling team traveled to compete in the Journeymen/ASICS Northeast Duals, where they went 3-0. The Cowboys wrestled 30 matches and won 27 of them.
Head coach Mark Branch said after the duals, “”The team, overall, showed toughness on top, which is new for us this season. Our last two weeks of training have been the hardest.” Wyoming began the Saturday duels with a 39-0 win over Buffalo. The Cowboys had two pins, a technical fall, and a win by major decision. Senior Andy McCully and Sophomore Benjamin Stroh both were able to pin their opponents.
The second dual came against No. 21 Old Dominion which Wyoming won 24-10. This was the Cowboy’s first win against a ranked opponent. Senior Tyler Cox (ranked No. 9) was able to beat No. 17 Brandon Jeske at 125 pounds with a score of 10-9. Cox scored in the final seconds to win the match. Sophomore Cole Mendenhall won by a decision of 5-3 against No. 8 Chris Mecate at 141 pounds. This was one of two upsets that gave the Cowboys the dual win.
The Cowboys won their final dual on Saturday against Binghamton, which Wyoming won 33-0. This match win put Wyoming’s record at 3-2 on the season. Wyoming got wins out of everyone who wrestled this match. Cox was able to get a technical fall out of his match and Senior Dakota Friesth won his match by major decision at 165 pounds.
Junior Tanner Harms went 2-0 on the day, with both of wins coming against ranked opponents. Harms beat the 18th-ranked Jacob Henderson by a score of 2-0, and Harms beat the 12th-ranked Tyler Deuel of Binghamton 9-6.
Coach Branch said of Harms, “Tanner looked composed in picking up two nice wins over ranked opponents.”
Wyoming had six wrestlers go 3-0 in the duals and three wrestlers go 2-1.
The Cowboys will not wrestle again until they face the Air Force Falcons on Dec.11. The dual will be in Laramie.
