Cowboys Host Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

Over the weekend, the Wyoming men’s golf team hosted the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif. Glenn Workman led the Cowboys in scoring with a 227 in three rounds, and the Cowboys finished 22nd overall with a score of 924 (+60).

“This was a great event and great experience for my young guys,” head coach Joe Jensen said to a Wyoming Athletics press release. Of the five golfers that Wyoming sent to the event, four of them were either a red shirt freshman or a true freshman, including Workman.

Wyoming performed near the bottom of the event, never placing higher than 20th in a 24-team field. The tournament started with four Cowboys shooting within three strokes of each other. Workman (74), freshman Drew McCullough (75), sophomore Ryan Wallen (77) and red shirt freshmen Aaron Lickteig (77) all finished in the top 85 in day one of the intercollegiate.

“The tournament got off to a great start with a great field with terrific conditions and weather,” said Jensen to Wyoming Athletics. Texas Tech led the event after day 1 with a score of 281 and two golfers, Clement Sordet and Esteban Restrepo, tied for second place overall.

The second day of the tournament had Wyoming face harsher weather conditions and another finish in the lower 20s.

“We had some terrible wind this morning when we teed off, but I see good things with this young group,” said Jensen to Wyoming Athletics. “This tournament field is a great way to start our spring season and to get some work done on a premium golf course with some of the top teams in the nation.”

Workman led the Cowboys after two rounds with a 151 (+7) after shooting a 77 in the second round. Wallen shot a 77 as well and brought his two round total to 154 (+10). The best second round score of the day came from freshman Quintin Pope at 76 (+4), and brought his two round total to 159 (+15) after an 83 (+11) in the first round. Texas Tech still led the intercollegiate after two rounds with a second round score of 282 (-6) and an overall score of 563 (-13). The lead golfer was Sordet from Texas Tech with a two-day score of 134 (-10).

The final day of the tournament brought Wyoming a 22nd place finish by shooting a 310, led by a Workman 76. Each Cowboy broke 80 in the final round.

“I’m pleased with my group. We went out and played hard and there were some mistakes out there, but it was a real good group effort,” Jensen said to Wyoming Athletics.

Trailing Workman: Pope shot a 77 (+5), McCullough shot a 78 (+6) and both Wallen and Lickteig shot 79 (+7). The final totals were Workman at 227, Wallen at 233, McCullough at 235, Pope at 236 and Lickteig 237.

“I’m very excited for this young group, but we need to be a little better next week because it will a premium field of teams,” Jensen said to Wyoming Athletics.

Wyoming men’s golf will return to action with the Arizona National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz. the weekend of Feb. 28.
