The UW Cowgirl golf team finished up a tough few days of competition in the Cowgirl Classic. Held at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona, the Cowgirls came in 12th with a total score of 919 (+55).
Sophomore Gabrielle Gibson recorded an impressive opening round, shooting one over par with a 73. Struggling in the second round, Gibson added ten strokes onto her score with an 83 (+11). Gibson finished the classic tied for 69th place after shooting a 79 (+7) in the final round.
Sophomore Klara Castillo came in at par for both the first and second rounds, shooting a season-best of 72. Castillo came in tied for 26th place, tallying a total score of 225 (+9).
Junior Mackenzie Barrie shot one of her best rounds on Tuesday with a 75 (+3) and finished the competition with 242 (+26), coming in tied for 94th place.
During the final day of the event, the Cowgirls moved up three spots in the rankings, improving from 15th place up to 12th place with a combined score of 919 (+55). The Cowgirl’s final day of competition came out to a 301 (+13).
Freshman Megan Knadler enjoyed a standout performance during the tournament, shooting the best 54-hole score of her career, tallying a 76 (+2) during the first round and 74 (+2) during the second. Knadler’s final-day score of 73 was low enough to land her tied for 20th place overall out of a field of over 100 people.
Senior Kathleen Kershisnik also recorded her best 54-hole performance, shooting a 74 (+2) during the final round. Kershisnik finished the final tournament of her Wyoming career, tying for 29th place with a total score of 226 (+10). Kershisnik shot a 77 (+5) in the first round and a 75 (+3) in the second round.
“I am very proud of the girls to bounce back and finish with a competitive round,” head coach Josey Stender said, according to a UW press release. “Kathleen (Kershisnik) and Megan (Knadler) were solid from start to finish and this should be great momentum heading into our last events.”
The Cowgirls are starting to wrap up their season and only have one event left before they head to the Mountain West Championship. But before that, the UW women’s golf is competing on April 11-12 when they head down to Phoenix, Arizona for the Bobcat Spring Invitational, hosted at the Tres Rios Golf Club.
