United States Senator: The Senate has two representatives from each state, regardless of population, that serve six-year terms. As the upper house of Congress, the senate has exclusive powers including ratifying Cabinet appointments, federal judges and military officers.
United States Representative: The House elects representatives according to the population of the state, leaving Wyoming’s population of 579,000 with one representative who will serve for two years. Like the Senate, the House has exclusive powers such as impeachment, initiating revenue bills and electing the president if the Electoral College ties.
State Representative: Elected officials in the State House represent up to 9,000 people, creating a House of 60 citizen representatives who serve two-year terms.
County Commissioner: Commissioners are elected in each of the 23 counties of Wyoming. Albany County has three officials who serve. They are in charge of setting the master plan for Albany County and setting budgets for roads, bridges and the sheriff’s office.
Members of Laramie City Council Ward #: Members of the Laramie City Council serve four-year terms. Seven members are elected from city wards, one per ward. The vote cast represents the voters’ specific ward. They set policy, budgets, ordinances and oversee the city staff. They choose the mayor and vice-mayor once every two years.
Laramie City Council at-large: While members of the city council are elected to represent specific wards of Laramie, the two at-large members represent the entire city council as general Laramie representatives.
Hospital District Trustees: The Hospital District Board consists of four-year term-elected representatives that are responsible for the hiring and firing of senior administration, such as the CEO and CFO of Ivinson Memorial Hospital. They also set policies for the hospital regarding such issues as inpatient care, physicians’ lawsuits and malpractice lawsuits.
