Sunday! Sunday! The 53rd Super bowl took place last Sunday with the Patriots winning 13-3 against the Rams, making this the Patriots sixth win.
Super Bowl LIII was the Rams first Super Bowl since 2002 and fans were divided on whether or not they should have made it. A game with the New Orleans Saints resulted in a missed call on a pass-interference that could have lost the Rams the game. Super Bowl LIII became the lowest scoring three quarters of any Super Bowl with a score of 3-3 and the second lowest scoring first half with a score of 3-0. Despite these statistics the game produced the longest punt in Super Bowl history.
This was the Patriots 11th Super Bowl and Tom Brady’s ninth in attendance and sixth win. Many viewers went in expecting the Patriots to win their third Super Bowl in row.
The Branding Iron reached out to students on campus for their opinion on the Super Bowl before the game.
“I would rather have seen the Saints in the Super Bowl but I’m a Patriots fan. I’m also from Idaho so I have a really personal connection with some of the (Saints) players,” UW student Matt Barfuss said.
Fellow student Andey Tuttle was interviewed about his opinions of the Super Bowl prior to the game.
“I feel like in any sport, a consistent application of the rules is necessary for any sort of meaning to be ascribed to anything,” said Tuttle. “The fact that this happened is a problem in sports because it decreases the quality in any sort of win that a team achieves.”
Tuttle was also rooting for the Patriots because it is his family’s team.
After the Super Bowl students were left underwhelmed by the performance of both teams.
“That was the most boring Super Bowl game ever, I just was surprised nobody made a touchdown until the second half,” said student Sydney Horton.
After watching the game Tuttle believed that the rules should have been more carefully upheld in the case of the Patriots who he thought survived some questionable calls and have been followed by controversies over the last several years.
“The Patriots are certainly a great team, and they should be commended for their achievement,” Tuttle said. “However, the NFL needs to improve their transparency and make it undeniably clear that they uphold the spirit of the game and nothing else.”
Student Christian Bitzas was disappointed in the way the game was played but proud that the Patriots won yet again.
“Super Bowl LIII was a backwards game where the fourth quarter would have been a good first. In my opinion, it was one of the worst Super Bowl games I’ve ever seen,” said Bitzas. “However, being born from New England, I was proud to see my pals the Patriots take another victory.”
