The football team is now 3-0 on the season, and yet it doesn’t feel like it. Sure the victory against Missouri was pretty sweet, but it is clear there is a lot of work to do if we want to keep the winning streak going with conference play coming up.
We have won with our rushing and defense when it matters most. The Cowboys have been relying on their running backs to make a difference in the game. They went for 237 yards with their rushing to score two important touchdowns from Trey Smith while the passing game in turn suffered.
“We don’t feel any pressure. We feel like we can move the ball whatever we do,” Trey Smith said in response to questions about feeling pressure from the passing performance. Smith had his first career 100-yard game as a graduate transfer from Louisville.
Although it has been a concern for the past two games, Shaun Chambers, the young redshirt freshman quarterback, has yet to have a break out game with his passing. On Saturday, he was only able to complete four of 12 passes he made for just 50 yards in the game against Idaho.
“We had to overcome a lot of self-inflicted wounds. We have to learn and grow from that,” Coach Craig Bohl said.
Bohl was frustrated over the performance on Saturday during the press conference and it was evident why. The Cowboys received seven costly penalties during the game, allowing the Vandals to continue several drives that resulted in either touchdowns or field goals.
“We got an undisciplined team,” he said. “We are going to address that on Monday.”
Bohl made sure to emphasize that a win is a win. Although the team has some things to work on, he made it clear about what the team has accomplished.
“Our identity- 3 and 0.”
The Cowboys will be back in action Saturday at H.A. Chapman stadium in Tulsa, Oklahoma against the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes. Tulsa is 1-2 on the season with fresh loss against a 3-0 Oklahoma State. Wyoming looks to extend its winning streak to 4-0 before meeting UNLV in the first conference game at home Sept. 28.
