The Wyoming Cowboy football team entered the 2019 season off a five-game winning streak from 2018.
Early in the season, Coach Craig Bohl named captains selected by the team through a vote. The list includes seniors tight end Logan Wilson, defensive end Austin Conway and wide receiver Josiah Halls as well as the quarterback, Shaun Chambers.
Bohl said, the football team respects the leadership from their four teammates including their underclassman quarterback.
“It’s unique to have a redshirt freshman quarterback as a captain who has garnered the respect from his teammates,” he said.
The Cowboys are 3-0 on the season that started Aug. 31 against the Missouri Tigers. They were not favored to win against the Tigers, but their defense and rushing plays were key to defeating the Tigers 37-31.
After the first two games, Chambers has completed 47 percent of his pass attempts. Despite the low completion percentage, the Cowboys have been able to rush the ball and gain yardage.
Running backs Trey Smith and Titus Swen, as well as quarterback Shaun Chambers, have been instrumental in moving the ball down the field. Although Chambers hasn’t been able to complete passes as much, he has been able to rush the football. He rushed for 329 yards the previous season in just three games.
“Our mindset is whatever we can do to get to 1 and 0,” Bohl said. “Taking these games one game at a time.”
The Cowboys will face Tulsa at Tulsa, Oklahoma at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
